Our outdoor patio setup

When we first started the design phase of our new construction model home in Las Vegas, my initial idea was to create a private dining space under a pergola in the backyard next to the grill.

Coming from New Jersey, it didn’t seem like a bad idea at first, however, after multiple visits to Las Vegas during the summer months, we quickly realized we needed as much covered space as possible so we could enjoy hosting backyard gatherings without melting in the sun because pergola curtains and umbrellas can only do so much (IYKYK).

Thankfully, we were given the design option of extending the covered back patio all the way the end of the house, which allowed us to utilize the patio for both entertaining and dining (otherwise the patio would have ended right before the window in the photo).

Due to the position of our lot, we still get some sun on the patio during the late afternoon, but it’s definitely not as bad as it would have been with my original idea. We’re working on getting a heavy-duty retractable shade installed for the back opening to keep the dining area shaded during those hours.

The patio is furnished for now, but I want to wait to finish decorating until the shade is installed, since right now that area is exposed to the elements (sun, wind, and occasional rain). I’m thinking some tropical plants, a chic outdoor rug, and hanging pendant lights to bring a natural, cozy boho feel to this space!

I’ve linked everything shown below (including similars for oos items). I love this outdoor patio sofa set because you can unclip the seats and rearrange them to your own configuration preferences. We bought two sets and placed the seats in a row facing each other on either sides of the patio, with the two coffee tables in the middle. This allows for guests to socialize face to face while having access to drinks and food in front of them.

I love our teak patio dining table (ours is sold out but this patio table is almost exact), it extends so you can make room for more guests, which is why we also have this long teak bench; it serves as an additional table or extra seating as needed. Since my overall theme and vibe for our home is boho chic, these wood and rattan chairs were the perfect addition to our patio dining table setup.

Our outdoor dining patio table decor setup

When it comes to hosting, I like to keep things minimal so the table doesn’t get overwhelmed with unnecessary clutter. I typically only allow 1-2 decoration-only items, like a plant or flowers, everything else can be aesthetic, but it needs to have a function too, like this citronella candle that’s cute, also but helps to keep the bugs away from the table.

Depending on the number of guests, I’ll move non-functional decor around to unused areas of the table like in between place settings or at the end of the table where there’s an open seat.
